AORAKI & PUKAKI

Senior Competitive Pathway at Waitaha Swim Club

Waitaha Swim Club’s senior squads - Aoraki and Pukaki - are home to swimmers who aspire to compete at the highest levels of the sport, both nationally and internationally.

Aoraki and Pukaki cater to swimmers who have progressed through the club’s junior development pathway and are ready to commit to a structured programme that reflects their abilities and goals. The squads provide a supportive environment where every swimmer is encouraged to reach their full potential - while maintaining the spirit and positive culture that defines Waitaha.

Tailored Pathways: Sprint or Distance Focus

As part of our performance programme evolution, Aoraki and Pukaki swimmers now have the opportunity to select a training pathway that best suits their strengths: Sprint or Distance.

This structure recognises that sprint and distance events place very different demands on the body and mind - and that specialised training is the best way to help athletes achieve peak performance.  Swimmers are supported to explore their event preferences and make informed choices, with flexibility to adjust over time in consultation with their coach. Sprint and Distance squads remain integrated within the Aoraki and Pukaki structure, fostering a shared team spirit while delivering focused, individualised training.

Why Specialise?

The decision to introduce Sprint and Distance squads is grounded in modern swim science and proven best practice.  As swimmers mature (typically from ages 13-14 for females, 15-16 for males), they benefit from event-specific training that allows them to develop the technical, physiological, and psychological attributes needed to succeed at the highest level.

Generic training delivers moderate success across a range of events. Specialised training helps swimmers become exceptional in their preferred events.  At Waitaha, we believe that empowering swimmers to follow the pathway that best suits them is the best way to support both performance and long-term enjoyment of the sport.
